A working summary should reveal its sources and gaps rather than conceal them inside one figure.
Connect the statement to the activity it describes
Identify the tax year and the source of the income figure. Keep payer statements, work records, and the filed return together, but preserve their separate roles. Bank activity may help explain a receipt; it does not automatically establish the amount’s reporting treatment. Note corrections, timing differences, and unexplained entries with their source documents rather than quietly replacing one total with another.
Read the account change as its own evidence
If a notice describes an adjustment or balance, compare its wording with the relevant return entry and source statement. A new bill is not fully explained by the phrase side income. Record the disputed or unclear fact and what would be needed to examine it. Follow the notice’s actual instructions while gathering support, and keep any proposed response separate from the authority’s later answer. A record-based review should precede a payment or relief discussion without promising how the underlying issue will be treated.
